The new Anastasia Island Branch of the County Library System is up and running. The Grand Opening was held on August 11th. The Civic Association participated in the ceremonies by donating several copies of their DVD St. Augustine Beach Chronicles, Vol. 1. This is the only “history of the beach.” Local historian David Nolan inspired the Beach Chronicles when he spoke to the Civic Association a few years ago. As well as presenting a comprehensive and entertaining history, he said two things about history in general. “It’s not that places don’t have history, they don’t have good historians” and “be sure to interview the long time residents and capture first hand accounts”. With board member and videographer Dusty Young we recorded as many images as we could find at the Historical Society Library and interviewed many of our 80-year-old residents. This DVD tells many wonderful first hand accounts about Anastasia Island and the beaches from the early1900’s through WWII. It can be borrowed from our new library or at St. Augustine Beach City Hall. You can own one for only a $15 donation. (Volume II is almost finished!)
Regular meetings of the Civic Association will resume Tuesday September 11 at 7pm at City Hall. Our featured speaker will be Sallie O’Hara, President of Friends of Scenic A1A. After many years of hard work by volunteers and county staff, our State Road A1A received state and federal designation as a scenic highway. The scenic designation now continues from the county line in Ponte Vedra down Vilano Island, through St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach through Flagler County and into Volusia County.
