October 2007

The St. Augustine Beach Civic Association’s Music by the Sea concert series has concluded its 5th and most successful season. We’d like to thank all of the great local bands and wonderful island restaurants for participating. We’d also like to thank our parking volunteers Bill Rosenstock and Glen Cross and especially our new volunteer activities manager Mitch Hall, a recent resident who brings years of concert promotion experience.
The Civic Association is proud to be able to bring the resources of this artistic community together to create a social and cultural beach atmosphere. What had started out as an eight week musical series inside the pavilion has grown to become a five month long weekly beach dance party with participants surrounding the pavilion on all sides. We look forward to next year’s concert series and seeing our many “regulars” return for another year.
Our next meeting will be on October 9th at 7pm. It will be held at the St. Augustine Beach Commission Meeting Room. This meeting is an important one to attend. Nomination ballots have been e-mailed to all the members of the Civic Association. Nominations for the Board will be announced and confirmed at the meeting. Voting on the nominated candidates will be held on the November 13th meeting.  This is your chance as a member to let your voice be heard. Our featured speaker this month is Ms. Barbara Patterson an Holistic Nurse Practitioner. She will talk about merging the gap between holistic and allopathic (traditional) medicine. All members of the public are invited to attend.
Work on the Splash Park is progressing rapidly now. I viewed the construction site with Public Works Director Mark Chatin in mid September and saw that the large drain pipes had been set and the water jet heads were being positioned. The Civic Association supports the splash park project and again would like to recognize Ms. Jill Atwood and Ms. Jennifer Savage for their leadership with the Beaches Council of the Chamber of Commerce for bringing this to our community.
Other events coming up at the Pier Park in October are the Sons of Italy’s annual Italian Festival on Columbus Day weekend, and a Volunteer Appreciation Picnic on Sunday afternoon October 21st sponsored by the Friends of Scenic A1A. Burgers and dogs will be grilled and a DJ will provide music. This event is open to the public.
Of course the Farmer’s Arts & Crafts Market will be open every Wednesday morning. Every space at the market has been filled and there are many new vendors for this season. Come check us out and support the Civic Association. For more information call 347-8007 or contact us on the web at staugbchcivicassoc.com.
